The Nordic Midwifery Congress 2013 is being held in Oslo on the 13th and 14th of June.

Amongst the presenters at the conference is Safer Births  Project Manager Dr. Hege Ersdal, who yesterday held two presentations on implementation related to newborn resuscitation. Her presentations “Low-cost Simulation – Based Training reduces early neonatal mortality”  and “A one day “Helping Babies Breathe” course improved simulated performance but not clinical management of neonates” are based on the findings from implementing Helping Babies Breathe at Haydom Lutheran Hospital as well as 7 other hospitals in Tanzania.

“It is very nice to be able to present to such an engaged and interested audience” said Dr. Ersdal after her presentation.

The Norwegian Midwife Association has been focusing on what happens on the day of birth. In an recent news article in Dagsavisen Nye Meninger, the head of the Norwegian Midwife Association Marit Heiberg together with the General Secretary of Save the Children Norway Tove Wang, describes the day of birth as “the most dangerous day in a child’s life”  pointing out that over 1 million children die within the first 24 hours of life.  To read the whole article press here (only in Norwegian).

Tomorrow Dr. Ersdal together with Signe Egenberg, will conduct a workshop entitled “Workshop on birth asphyxia and bleeding after birth – a taste of simulation training” demonstrating the Helping Mothers Survive and Helping Babies Breathe programs.

Signe Egenberg is currently doing her PhD looking into implementation of Helping Mothers Survive in two hospitals in Moshi, Tanzania, and in two Norwegian hospitals.
